For next Thursday I am going to experiment with surfaces. I'm going to go to Fingerle to get some scraps of birch ply and particle board. I'm going to see how different thicknesses of papers work and what type[s] of glue works best. I'm going to take Amanda's suggestion, too, and try Yes! paste to see how I like it.
Below is my round of people for this week. Nosferatu is on a movie screen, which I am going to put in a park. Additionally, I don't know if I like the last two people. I think I'm going to go back and fix them.
Oh and commenting on what you actually said: Nosferatu looks awesome and I actually like him in front of the movie screen. And the very last person I love exactly as she is. Mmhmm I do.
The Nosferatu is SPOT ON! I love him! I got a kick out of the muscle-y man...he reminds me of all the awkwardly muscular European men wearing Abercrombie and Hollister tshirts I saw. - Gracie
Katie--not at ALL! I would feel honored. Good to know about the very last one. That's the one I was most iffy on. I did change the second-to-last one, though, because it just looked like I was lazy and didn't care (which I didn't). I like her much better now since her makeover and I will post this weekend. Gracie--THANKS!!!! ;) Thank you, too, for your dedication to my blog. Your following it (and now your mom!!) means a lot. You both are such wonderful people!
These are wonderful, Laura! I don't know who Nosferatu is, but he is phenomenal. I honestly like how you've started incorporating some ready-made bodies with your own cutouts - mixes things up and very visually interesting! Each and every one of your characters exudes their own unique personality. Genius!
Okay, "Swamp Thing" is the lady facing right in the cream dress with the cigarette, second up from bottom. I agree that maybe the bottom one doesn't mesh although I love the details. I still love my little gangsta' babies and Nose-ef-eratu.
In terms of the last two people- I like the last one, but I'm not as convinced by the second to last. I agree with the other comments that her head doesn't mesh with the body- I look forward to seeing her "makeover".
How do you plan to make the top photo look like it's on a movie screen? Right now it might be confused with the other people (ie- it might just look like that person in in front of the movie screen). It all depends on how you end up putting it together.
How did the Yes! paste work? What about the wood? I'm eager to see the experiments-
I love what you're doing with these characters' mouths. They are so expressive- really hilarious Laura. Do you look at photographs when you're creating these, or are you doing it from your imagination, or what?
Laura these are so great!! Are you working from your photos or your imagination? Your really capture people's personalities through these subtle gestures, facial expressions, body language and fashion choices. I love their faces, especially their mouths and eyelashes. You're coming out with a really strong voice here.
I agree that the second to last lady didn't fit, but I do really like the last one. I think the problem with her is that you didn't collage the skin on her arms/hands which flattens her body out. If you just go over those with some paper, she will be perfect. One more thing: it looks like a lot of people's cigarettes are backwards from how they would hold them, with the filter end being where the flame should be. Is that intentional?
Laura, I like the heads on cut-out magazine bodies. I especially liked the 1950's cigarette woman and the babies. I also liked your muscle man and map-reading chick. His expression was perfect. You're such an original. Aunt Carol
Thanks, Aunt Carol! I am looking forward to seeing you this weekend! My mom said the two of you have a lunch date on Saturday and I might tag along! Thanks for commenting :)
LOVE these. Do you mind if I save to my computer? :]
